To-Do Tuesday 9-12-17 | Santa’s Village Update

Hello and Happy Tuesday, friends! This past week I kept up with my goals of having 16 bags done by Friday for the large shop order, and three more bags sewn by Monday. I confess to having hand-stitched closed the linings of the 16 bags on Saturday. I wasn’t stuck out in the sewing room though, and since I enjoy hand-stitching so much, it was a very relaxing Saturday. I am not waiting until the end of this week to stitch the linings closed for the last half of the bags. I will be stitching them in the evenings so that I can take pictures of this order by Saturday and have it packaged and ready to mail before Monday.

Stitch ALL The Things | North Pole Post Office

This week my evening stitching time was spent working on the North Pole Post Office from Santa’s Village. I just love the letters hanging from the line. Such a cute chart! So far I’ve finished three of the twelve charts from the series. There are three rows of four houses and I will be stitching one house per month. Which means the top row will be finished in October. Here’s the progress so far…

Stitch ALL The Things | Progress on Santa's Village

This week I will be finishing up the large bag order, and back to work on Ship’s Manor Mystery Halloween Town cross stitch WIP. The sixth clue was released on the 6th, so I want to get that done before I fall behind again.

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Continue working on shop order.
  • Stitch Clue 6 of Mystery Halloween Town

To-Do Tuesday 4-11-17 | Pile O’ Work

Hello friends! It’s time to check in and see how we’re doing with our To-Do lists. I sewed every day this past week, for about 7 hours a day. That’s not quite how I envision a work week, since I’d really like to take weekends off, but my workload was a bit too big for me to meet my deadlines without working over the weekend. The past two weekends, actually. The Mister is not thrilled about that, and frankly neither am I. Learning to schedule properly is high on the need-to-do list.

Stitch ALL The Things | Zip top bags

I began my large commissioned order for 25 zippered bag pouches of two different sizes. I am doing this assembly line style, so I cut out all of the fabrics and interfacings, did the fusing, and am now in the process of finishing the bags. I’ve got them sorted by thread color, since I hate having to constantly change threads.

Stitch ALL The Things | Bag linings

I only have seven bags completely finished, and I made six more today. One of those little bags is actually for someone else’s order, but I needed to finish that bag today since her order is being mailed tomorrow. So, in addition to the seven completed bags for the big order, I assembled five more bags today. I still have to hand sew the linings closed. I save that step for the evenings, since I can sit on the couch with the Mister while hand sewing. It goes into my cross stitching time, but it’s still hand sewing and I love that part!

This coming week will be finishing this large order, and then making four more project bags along with a coordinating tool pouch for another order. Once these bags are done, I think I will be done taking commission orders before our summer vacation. I am really at the point of burnout, and I don’t want to end up hating a hobby I love. Also, I need to find enough energy to make myself a new handbag before we leave, since my old one is starting to fall apart.

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish Commissioned orders

To-Do Tuesday 1-3-2017 | Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a fun and safe New Years holiday!

Stitch ALL The Things | Mermaid Project Bag

This week was one heck of a roller coaster ride. I finished another Large sized The Project Bag and grime guard Q Snap cover for Danielle, aka Stitcherista. Love how this bag turned out! I also was working figuring out the correct pricing for the bags when I read some small verbiage in the pattern which read, in part, “This pattern is protected by copyright and is intended for the personal use of retail purchaser only… Permission is granted to make up to ten bags for gifts or for sale. If you want to make more than ten, please contact Annie Unrein for permission.” I can’t tell you the distress I felt for about 24 hours after reading that. Copyright law (in the U.S.) covers the pattern itself; the content and images. You can NOT copyright the end product made from the pattern when it is considered a “useful item”, as bags are. Which means you can make as many as you want to sell, keep or giveaway. However, some pattern designers attempt to control that by adding adding such wording to their patterns. Some even attempt to get more money by selling a cottage license. Which is not at all legally necessary. I struggled for hours with what to do, as my actions would not only impact myself but potentially the shop who contacted me for bags. The worst that could happen would be Cease and Desist letters and the threat of litigation. But really… who wants to deal with that sort of stress in their life even if they are legally in the right?! In the end, I contacted the designer and received such an amazing response from her. She said she includes that verbiage in her patterns to prevent mass production, but if it was just me sewing bags then I absolutely had permission to sew them. Also? She said if I sent her pictures and let her know when I had them available to sell, she would do some marketing for me. Sayyyyy what???!??!?!?! So, my crushing day turned out brilliantly! But, I must admit, it set me back this week.

Stitch ALL The Things | Project Bags in Tula Pink

After coming back from that rather rough day, I got to work on the two sets of bag orders. I completed three of the bags on Monday, one bag is mostly sewn (I’m just waiting for some Soft and Stable to arrive so I can quilt the main panel), and two more bags will be sewn by the end of Tuesday.

Stitch ALL The Things | Project Bag WIPS

One of the orders requested grime guards, so I’ve got four prepped and ready to sew Tuesday as well.

Stitch ALL The Things | Grime Guard WIPS

It’s been a busy week, and I’ve still got a lot of work ahead, but I am SEW excited about it!

What do you hope to accomplish in 2017? I can’t wait to read all about it!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish two Project Bag commissions
  • Work on shop commission

To-Do Tuesday 12-20-16 | 2017 Plans

Stitch ALL The Things | Motorcycle Quilt Top

This week I seemed to have a bit of sewing A.D.D. going on. I finished Mister’s quilt top, got the backing cut to size, and cut and ironed the batting. I was all set to baste everything together, but then another project started screaming my name. Normally I can focus on getting one project finished and then working on the next one… but not this time.

Stitch ALL The Things | Beauties and Brains Project Bag

About a month ago I found the Projects Bag pattern on the ByAnnie website. I loved the vinyl front on this bag and knew it would be a fantastic way to organize my cross stitching WIPs. I spied the pattern sitting on my to-do project pile several days ago and had to make one up right away. I used my Alexander Henry Beauties and Brains yardage to make this one, along with Kona Cotton in Aloe and Art Gallery Fabrics Oval Elements in Licorice. I made the extra large bag, so this baby is 16.5″ x 16.5″. Which is perfect for one of my big cross stitching projects in 2017. And that is the perfect segue into my plans for 2017!

Stitch ALL The Things | 2017 Cross Stitch Plans

In 2017 I would really like to make progress with my quilting, bag making, and cross stitch plans. To do this, I came up with a schedule that I think might work. I plan on doing all of my sewing during the day before dinner, and cross stitching in the evenings after dinner. I normally focus on one cross stitch WIP at a time, but I’d like to try doing the rotation thing that I have seen a lot of stitchers do. This year I want to complete my Burlesque Zombie Portrait, so I will keep that in rotation for the first two weeks of the month, Tuesday through Friday. I am super, duper, DUPERTY-DUPER hopeful that Santa is going to put a Sleepy Hollow by Glendon Place chart and supplies under the tree for Mrs. Santa for Christmas and, if so, that will be on the rotation for the third week of the month, Tuesday through Friday. If that’s not under the tree (whimper, whine, whine), then I will work on my Care Taker chart (the zombie nurse) for that week. The fourth week of the month, and any extra days left in the month after that, I will be working on two stitch alongs. The first is Ship’s Manor’s Mystery Town 2017, and the second is from the January 2017 issue of Cross Stitch Collection, Stitch The Seasons. It’s the houses picture in the collage above. The whole chart is in that issue, but I will be stitching only one house per month. I signed up for the Full Coverage on The Fifth event on Stitch Maynia, which means the piece I will work on for that day, is Care Taker (zombie nurse) and I intend to use the whole day/evening to stitch, if it’s possible. No stitching on Mondays, since that is blog writing night. On the weekend evenings, Saturday and Sunday, I will be working on various smaller stitching projects and will post pictures of them as I go along.

Stitch All The Things | 2017 New Quilt Plans

As far as quilting and bag making go, I am dedicating two or three weeks per month to quilting, depending on whether I am going to quilt one of my four already sewn quilt tops, or if I am starting a brand new quilt. I have four new quilts I want to make in 2017. The Bargello quilt for Josh (not pictured), Triple Barnstar by Stitchery Dickory Dock, Pow-Wow Quilt by Cluck Cluck Sew, and Shimmer Quilt Pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew. I may try to fit one or two more quilts in for the year, but I am not counting on any quilting during the months of May through July.

For the remaining one to two weeks of the month I will work on a sewing related project. I have 8 bags that I’d like to make this year. Swoon’s Sadie (currently only available through the Bag Of The Month Club, but will be released on Swoon’s website in January), Charlotte City Tote, and Nora Doctor Bag. Sew Sweetness’ Appaloosa bag and Coalition bag (again, part of the Bag of The Month club, release will be in January). Blue Calla’s Boronia Bowler Bag, Emmaline Bags Necessary Clutch Wallet, and another Hippo Hobo Bag.

The last sewing related thing I’d like to accomplish in 2017 is to start sewing apparel again. I want to start small, so my plan is to make the v-neck t-shirt from Craftsy’s Sewing With Knits Class. I’d also like to get a firm grasp of my serger, so I recently bought the Beginner Serger sewing class on Craftsy when it was on sale for $10. I always seem to have trouble getting my serged edges to look right, and I’m hopeful this will help me understand how the serger works and to adjust the tension properly.

Well! That was a rather long post, but it adequately sums up my stitchy plans for 2017. I feel like I have a good combination of bag making/sewing, quilting, and cross stitching planned. I didn’t mention it earlier, but during the summer I will most likely focus on cross stitching. I’ll still bring my sewing machine with me when we go to Oregon, just in case! Do you have specific goals or plans for the new year? If you write it as a separate post, feel free to link that post up as well!

This coming week I intend to make three more project bags and baste the Mister’s quilt. I am not sure that I will get to quilting it over Christmas, but we’ll see.

I wish you Happy Holidays and/or Merry Christmas!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Complete three Project Bags
  • Baste Quilt
