Earlier this year I finished my second Moxie Quilt for my niece. The first moxie quilt went to her cousin, my other niece, and since the two girls like to have the same things I knew I had to make another Moxie.
All fabrics in the quilt are from Tula Pink’s Foxfield line. This quilt is different from the first in that I used a different fabric for the binding and for the backing. I was curious if the binding and backing fabrics would give the quilt a different look, so I’ve put the two quilts side by side here:
and the backs…
I’m not seeing a huge difference on the fronts of the quilt (other than a really sunny day popping the colors of one and a cloudy day giving a more subdued look to the other). The back fabric definitely gives a different look. I love both fabrics so much, I’m glad I chose different backings for each quilt!
I quilted the second quilt very similar to the first quilt… Both being inspired by the quilting done by Angela Walters on Tula’s original Moxie quilt. I am definitely seeing progress in my free-motion quilting thanks to both of these quilts. I still have a long way to go, but I am no longer afraid of grabbing a quilt and just free motion quilting the heck out of it.
As usual, I used Aurifil 50 wt for piecing and quilting. I typically use 40 wt in my quilting, as the quilting pops just a bit more than 50 wt; however, the coordinating Tula Pink thread I had on hand was 50 wt, so I went with that. Regardless of which thread I use, it goes through my machine beautifully with only a small amount of lint. I love that!
I embroidered a label for this quilt, which is something I have done for most of my quilts. This came out much lighter than I expected, but if you’re up close to the quilt you can read the stitching better. It takes quite a bit of time to do this though (about 8 hours of stitching), so I am switching to Spoonflower pre-printed labels. I found a fabulous 2-part tutorial by Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts HERE and HERE and came up with my own design. I’m excited to get them and use them!
One other note to make is that I chose to add the 5″ scrappy border to this quilt, just as I did the other quilt. I wanted to make the quilt a bit bigger than the pattern called for, and I think the border gives it some extra color. Both girls love their quilts and my sister sent me a picture of both playing “hotel” with their quilts on the floor and pretending they were sleeping at a grand hotel with wonderful beds. I just love children’s imaginations!
