To-Do Tuesday 1-3-2017 | Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a fun and safe New Years holiday!

This week was one heck of a roller coaster ride. I finished another Large sized The Project Bag and grime guard Q Snap cover for Danielle, aka Stitcherista. Love how this bag turned out! I also was working figuring out the correct pricing for the bags when I read some small verbiage in the pattern which read, in part, “This pattern is protected by copyright and is intended for the personal use of retail purchaser only… Permission is granted to make up to ten bags for gifts or for sale. If you want to make more than ten, please contact Annie Unrein for permission.” I can’t tell you the distress I felt for about 24 hours after reading that. Copyright law (in the U.S.) covers the pattern itself; the content and images. You can NOT copyright the end product made from the pattern when it is considered a “useful item”, as bags are. Which means you can make as many as you want to sell, keep or giveaway. However, some pattern designers attempt to control that by adding adding such wording to their patterns. Some even attempt to get more money by selling a cottage license. Which is not at all legally necessary. I struggled for hours with what to do, as my actions would not only impact myself but potentially the shop who contacted me for bags. The worst that could happen would be Cease and Desist letters and the threat of litigation. But really… who wants to deal with that sort of stress in their life even if they are legally in the right?! In the end, I contacted the designer and received such an amazing response from her. She said she includes that verbiage in her patterns to prevent mass production, but if it was just me sewing bags then I absolutely had permission to sew them. Also? She said if I sent her pictures and let her know when I had them available to sell, she would do some marketing for me. Sayyyyy what???!??!?!?! So, my crushing day turned out brilliantly! But, I must admit, it set me back this week.

After coming back from that rather rough day, I got to work on the two sets of bag orders. I completed three of the bags on Monday, one bag is mostly sewn (I’m just waiting for some Soft and Stable to arrive so I can quilt the main panel), and two more bags will be sewn by the end of Tuesday.

One of the orders requested grime guards, so I’ve got four prepped and ready to sew Tuesday as well.

It’s been a busy week, and I’ve still got a lot of work ahead, but I am SEW excited about it!
