The second Moxie quilt has been finished and mailed to my niece. Woo hoo! I hope she will love it.

I started my nephew’s quilt today, right after mailing my niece’s quilt. His birthday is the middle of March, so I’m not wasting any time getting his started. He loves Spiderman, so I decided to go with Red, Sapphire, and Charcoal in Timeless Treasures Sketch fabric. I saw Piece N Quilt’s Urban Churn Dash Sewalong and her Urban Churn Dash block reminded me of a spiderweb. Her block is 24″ finished size, but I didn’t want the quilt I was working on to be as big as her finished quilt. So I recalculated the pieces to make a 21″ finished block.

I starched and pressed all the fabric today and cut out enough pieces to make one block. I wanted to test my measurements to be sure I didn’t miscalculate anything. I ended up putting the corner blocks on wrong (the red should be facing into the block, rather than to the outside). I will fix that on my next day off and continue cutting out all the pieces needed to complete the quilt top. Currently my starching and pressing is transferring some red to the ironing board, so before I continue cutting I will prewash all of my fabric. That’s not something I normally do, as I haven’t had any problems with bleeding in the past (and I thank my Color Catchers for that). However, I won’t be ignoring this big red flag, despite my desire to get this quilt done ASAP. I have a strong feeling it will bite me in the butt if I do.

Love those colors! Also, I think you’re right to pre-wash. Reds are the worst for bleeding. Better safe than sorry!

I’m loving these colors too! And I am SO glad I did prewash the fabrics. Whew!

Sometimes even well made reds will do that to you. Smart to pre-wash the fabric given the warning signs! Congratulations on finishing the Moxie quilt and getting it shipped off! 🙂

I am so glad that I did take the time to wash the fabrics. I’m sure that red would have ruined the quilt otherwise. Sometimes I get so impatient to just get the quilt done that I ignore the little voice that tells me to take time to do an extra step. Very glad I listened to that voice this time!!
