I am a wonderful wife. So wonderful that I actually forgot to add my husband’s birthday prep and celebration to last week’s To-Do list. Go me! So I didn’t get too much sewing done this past week. However, I did end up making a pretty bomb cake.
Mister originally asked for a Black Forest cake. Then he remembered that I’m not fond of cherries. That’s not relevant to the birthday person’s choice of cake in our house, but he decided that a dark chocolate cake with a strawberry filling and whipped cream frosting sounded better. I used to make and decorate cakes, so I was up to the challenge. Despite the fact that I sold all of my cake decorating supplies last year because everyone seemed to be done with homemade cakes, opting for Dairy Queen ice cream cakes the past four years. I think I managed quite well with my plastic spatula, a new set of cake pans, and a random star tip and frosting bag I had shoved in a drawer.

Thank goodness for Allrecipes. I found a great recipe for strawberry filling. I used this recipe to make the chocolate cake. I decided to make the whipped cream frosting from this recipe. I also tried to make chocolate curls for the first time. At first I refrigerated the chocolate, thinking that would keep it from melting when using a potato peeler to get the curls. That just made chocolate shavings. I used that to coat the sides of the cake. Then a facebook friend posted a recipe by The Pioneer Woman and less then ten minutes later I had chocolate curls! I will definitely be making them again. Everyone in the family treated me like a rockstar that day.
I also managed to get the house deep cleaned this past week. Why is it that the house never seems dirty and cleaning never seems more important than sewing until someone is coming over? Well, at least that’s done until the Holidays and we were able to have a wonderful visit with Mister’s son and wife!

I did get in a bit of sewing in this week. I finished two F Word blocks. I paper pieced the Windmill block, but did not print the paper pieces out in mirror image. So my block is actually the reverse of what it’s supposed to be. Since it still looks fine the way it is, I will not be re-doing the block. I like it! I also made a Basket block, but since I’m not a fan of applique I chose not to add the handle. I’m pretending it’s “modern” version of the Basket block.
I also finished assembling the Eerie quilt blocks into a top yesterday. I will be focusing on the quilt this week and plan on adding the borders and making the quilt back. I am feeling too distracted by the quilt to focus on the Christmas gifts or the Sugar Block Club block. No F Word blocks for this week either.

The evenings are normally reserved for stitching, but I haven’t made much progress on my Whacky Witches In Stitches this past week. Too tired. I’m just about finished with block 5 and block 8 was just released today. I’m a little behind so I’m not sure this will be finished by Halloween. I sure am enjoying stitching it up though!
This week’s To-Do list:
Add borders to Eerie & make backingCompleted 10/18- Baste, Quilt & Bind Eerie Basted 10/19, started quilting 10/20
