To-Do Tuesday 11-29-16 | It’s Crunch Time

Happy Tuesday, Friends! If you are hand crafting gifts this year for the holidays, it’s time to crank it into high gear! I am happy, actually more like relieved, to say that I will not be making one gift this year. The last two years (maybe three?) I have put myself under pressure to get gifts made and this year I decided I was not gonna do it. Nope. Hello Amazon, and the gift card kiosk at my local grocery store. It’s not meant to be impersonal, because I try to find gifts and gift cards that the recipients will love. I am looking forward to a December of crafting for enjoyment and not because I am rushing to get presents done and posted in time to arrive by Christmas.

Stitch ALL The Things | Let's Sew by Ursula Michael

In fact, this past Thanksgiving weekend was exactly what I said it would be. Relaxing! The kids were old enough to help prepare dinner, and then we spent Friday decorating the house for Christmas. It was wonderful! I did finish my Let’s Sew cross stitch piece and found a frame at Goodwill for it. I mounted and framed it myself. That was a lot more tedious than I expected. I kept measuring, and remeasuring to make sure it was centered. I couldn’t get a great picture of it because of the glare, so I can’t showcase how amazing it looks in real life.

The back of this piece looks almost as great as the front. I worked really hard not to run threads across the back, because I didn’t want them to show after I mounted the piece onto black foam core board. I will say that were I to stitch this piece again I would not use aida, and especially black aida. There were more than a few quarter stitches, and seeing the regular holes on black aida is difficult enough without adding in fractional stitches that you have to punch through the center of an aida square. I should also note that I converted the thread color to DMC 729, Medium Old Gold. I started it November 6th and finished by November 24th. I am happy for a 2016 start and finish!

This week I will be focused on finishing the bag. I was going to start work on Josh’s quilt, but decided to push that off until his birthday. He will be getting a bigger-than-anticipated Christmas present this year (Thanks to Nintendo for creating the New Nintendo 3DS shortage and to Amazon for selling them early to scalpers. You rock! Jerks.) and I don’t want to pile all the gifts onto one holiday. Since his birthday is in March, I won’t feel huge pressure to finish a Bargello by December 21st and I can make sure I get it done right. Wrapping my head around the process of making one of these has been challenging!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish Bag

  1. The Let’s Sew project is absolutely stunning, I bet it’s amazing in person! I, too, am taking a relaxed view of gifts for Christmas, and it feels great not being under pressure to get stuff done! I have a few small projects I’m going to make, but they were already on my list and won’t add pressure! I’m looking forward to seeing the finished bag! It sounds like you had a fabulous holiday weekend!

    1. Thank you! I loved stitching this one up, it was so much fun. I just needed the break this year from the pressure of making handmade gifts. I didn’t realize how much until I noted that all of my shopping was done, with the exception of four gift cards. This coming weekend I am doing all of my baking and shipping off cookies and chocolate peanut clusters early. It dawned on me that there was no good reason why I was fighting postal office lines to mail them off in the middle of the month. Doesn’t everybody like to eat Christmas-ey treats all December long? I know I do! So yay for being done with all Christmas shopping and shipping by next Monday! Woo Hoo!!

    2. Christmas-ey treats all month long! Let’s start a movement! LOL

We are nearly done, as well, with only our youngest daughter and a couple gift cards. It sure does feel nice, and it’s allowing me time for “fun” sewing and crafting!

    3. I should have said, “doesn’t everyone like to eat treats all December long?!” Because I certainly don’t need a specific holiday as an excuse to eat treats! 😀

  2. Your Let’s Sew needlework is gorgeous! Love the frame! What a perfect find for your handwork! That is a good plan for the bargello. No need to rush or pressure yourself with a March birthday coming up. There are two major steps in creating the bargello – I’m sure you will do fine with both! As for life – I’m trying to make it more relaxed all year long. Maybe you have a peaceful Holiday Season!

    1. Thank you, Sharon! I am just tickled pink with how pretty it turned out and finding exactly the right frame! I am relieved to have a bit more time to understanding the Bargello process and not having to rush through it. I like how you think about making life more relaxed all year long. I’m with you! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

  3. Let’s Sew is freaking gorgeous. And I love the plan for the bargello. Cannot wait to see more of that and to hear your thoughts on making one.

    1. Thank you!! I am so happy with how it turned out! I am excited to work on the Bargello too. I think Josh is going to love it, and at least I don’t need to rush to get it done now. I’m still trying to wrap my brain around how to make this. I’m so used to individual blocks, you know? It will be interesting, for sure!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment... You just made my day!!
