To Do Tuesday button

It’s another Tuesday already?! Ack!  Sorry this post is up a bit late.  I was fighting off illness all weekend, and then yesterday it caught up with me.  I ended up sitting on the couch working on Mister’s anniversary gift all day and completely forgot about getting this post done.

This past week, I assembled the secret quilt top, and then designed a quilt back for it this week.  I realized I had not embroidered a label for the back, so a couple of my evenings were spent getting that done.  I got all of the pieces for my back starched, ironed and cut out.  I started assembling it and about 80% of the way through realized that I made an error on my graph paper and the pieced half of the quilt back was four inches off.  I ended up ripping out 86″ of stitching, and ran out of time on Saturday to fix it.  Sunday I was feeling poorly, and with our Easter activities I just never got back to fixing the back of the quilt.

I am down to just 30 days before I am out of sewing time for the summer.  So most of my list is relegated to “after summer” status.  I feel like I am in crunch time, because I have this quilt to finish, Mister’s project must be completed by May 6th (the day before our anniversary), and I HAVE to get my May and June Bee blocks mailed out in May.  And I don’t even know what my May and June Bee mates want for their blocks…  Yikes!  Not to mention I have a lot of deep cleaning and preparation to do for the house before our summer plans get going. I’m stressing just writing this!

Anyway, the list will be short for the next few weeks, as I focus only on those projects that must get done.

This weeks list:

  • Finish making backing for secret quilt  Done 4-23
  • Baste quilt and quilt it
  • Do at least 3 hours of needlework per day Yep!

To-Do as time allows (before May 22nd):

  • Complete May and June Bee Blocks
  • Make the Go-Go Bag for Callie before she leaves for summer vacation
  • Make Megan a Camera Bag before she moves out

After Summer List:

  • Make the Skillbuilder Scrap Jar & Pincushion blocks
  • Design VQR Quilt back
  • Get the May, June, & July InstaBee blocks done and mailed before May 20th
  • Continue working on the How-To/Tips page for the Brother PQ-1500S
  • Make the April Sugar Block Club block
  • Make February Bag of the Month
  • Make March Bag of the Month
  • Make April Bag of the Month

To Do Tuesday & Weekly Update: 4-15-2014

Happy Tuesday!!

I’ve been quiet on the blog lately, save for these Tuesday posts.  I have a couple of pretty big deadlines headed my way, and I have been spending a lot of my time preparing for them.   We have a daughter graduating from high school in about 40 days and I have been busy making her present.  We’ve been preparing a new-to-us truck for being towed behind the coach (with our motorcycles in the truckbed) for our summer plans. The towing base plates have been installed, and we’ve figured out that we actually can fit the two Magna’s in the back of the pickup bed.  Right now we’re just waiting for the drive-shaft disconnect we’ve ordered to arrive and then we’ll install that on the truck.

Mister’s and my 3rd wedding anniversary is coming up shortly, and he is a huge fan of special handmade gifts.  He is the sentimental/romantical sort.  So I’ve decided to make a special gift for Mister, using a craft I’ve never done before.  In a short time frame.  BECAUSE THAT’S HOW I ROLL.  Seriously.  That’s how I learned to embroider… making a gift for him.  That’s why I learned to quilt… to make a gift for my daughter. So why wouldn’t I choose to learn another craft I’ve never done before and give myself a short window to do it in?  Doesn’t everyone do things that way?  I mean, how else do you learn new hobbies? In my world this is the ONLY way to learn something new. Under pressure. And a lot of it.

A secret project for Mister!

A secret project for Mister!

Having said that, I probably won’t be posting much save for these To-Do Tuesday posts and updates from the previous week’s post.  I am either at the sewing machine or helping Mister with auto work during the day and doing hand/needle work all evening.  If you’re on Instagram, I post a lot on there and that’s pretty much my “bloggy” platform when I don’t have time to type.  So if you’d like to see what I’m up to go check out my IG feed.  Except for Mister. Stay away… there are spoilers there!

I managed to get almost everything done on last week’s list.  I was able to get the Vintage Quilt Revival top put together quickly.  I LOVE it!  It ended up being 88″ x 71″ and the kids had a difficult time holding it up for a picture. I had to set it aside, and I have not had time to design a back for it yet.  I’ll end up using my leftover scraps and FQ’s for the back and I have a vague idea of what I want that to look like.

A finished quilt top!

A finished quilt top!

I got the April InstaBee block sewn and mailed it off today. I also completed a block for myself, for my “souvenier” InstaBee quilt.

April's InstaBee Block

April’s InstaBee Block

I finished embroidering the blocks for the secret quilt several days ago.  However when I started to put them together with the print fabrics to make giant 9-patch blocks, I realized that the pre-cuts I embroidered on were not 10″ square.  Since the edges were pinked, I did not want to try and fudge the blocks in.  My remedy was to find a fabric that matched the color in the embroidered quote, cut the blocks down to 9″ and put a .5″ border around the block. They look SO much better that way! Doing that put me a bit behind on my work, and I just managed to finish the huge 9-patch blocks for the secret quilt today. I’ll be cutting them tomorrow and assembling the top. Can’t wait to show you all what that will look like finished!

There are seven 9-patch blocks there!

That’s seven 9-patch blocks in a pile!

This weeks list:

  • Cut 9-patch blocks and assemble secret quilt top
  • Design and make backing for secret quilt
  • Order more batting
  • Baste quilt & start quilting
  • Do at least 3 hours of hand needlework per day

To-Do as time allows:

  • Make the Go-Go Bag for Callie before she leaves for summer vacation
  • Make the Skillbuilder Scrap Jar & Pincushion blocks
  • Design VQR Quilt back
  • Get the May, June, & July InstaBee blocks done and mailed before May 20th
  • Continue working on the How-To/Tips page for the Brother PQ-1500S
  • Make the April Sugar Block Club block
  • Make February Bag of the Month

To Do Tuesday: 4-7-2014

Happy Tuesday! I hope you’ve all had an amazing week! I’m posting this a few hours early so that I can link up with Blossom Heart Quilts for Sew Cute Tuesday.

I was pretty happy to have completed the majority of my list this past week. I moved one item from the “Do when time allows” list to “This weeks list”. I’ve been meaning to make a mini-quilt as a Thank You gift and I simply could not delay sending it out any longer. So I changed my list around to make that a priority.

Mini Disco Quilt

Mini Disco Quilt

This was my first mini-quilt, and I absolutely loved making it!  I used Jaybird Quilts Mini Hex N More rule and with the Mini-Disco pattern. The fabric used was left over scraps of Modern Solids that I used to make the Vintage Quilt Revival blocks. I used Aurifil 50 wt. #2605 for piecing (not pictured), Aurifil 50 wt variegated thread #4648 for quilting, and Aurifil 50 wt #5005 for binding. The backing was my favorite part of the “fairyland” print by DeLeon Design Group for Alexander Henry. The quilt is currently on the way to its intended recipient.I surely hope she likes it!

Love this Alexander Henry "fairyland" fabric!

The Skill Builder Chevron Star/Churn Dash block was quilted early in the week, and then I got to work on the mini-quilt.  By Sunday I was able to get all of the Vintage Quilt Revival sashing and corner stone blocks cut out, and decided on a layout. The pattern does not call for an outer border, but I thought a border in the same fabric, and the same size, as the sashing pieces would really make the blocks look nice. I cut that border out, and right now I have about three-quarters of the quilt top assembled. I should have the top completed by tomorrow. Yay!

To Do Tuesday: 4-1-2014

Happy Tuesday! I’m not a big fan of trickery… so there’s no April Fool’s joke laying in wait for you. Just call me Ms. Fuddy-Duddy!

I surprised myself by completing all of the blocks on my list this past week. I didn’t think I was going to accomplish much of anything, since I spent several days helping Mister with more auto work. Turns out I powered out four blocks in three days’ time… and that was with totally messing up all the paper pieces on one block and having to redo them all! I’m really pleased with what was accomplished.

I also ended up doing a bit more prep work on the secret quilt than I anticipated. I realized I did not have even half of the fabric needed to complete it, so I raided my stash. I was tempted to try and find more of the original fabric I had purchased (Verona by Riley Blake), and I even found a FQ bundle on Etsy. However, I am really trying to sew with only my stash, and of course part of quilting is mixing and matching fabrics! I had a half yard bundle of Bonjour Mon Ami, and selected several pieces from that line to coordinate with the Verona fabric. I posted a picture of them together on Instagram to see if I was thinking right about combining the two lines. I received a resounding YES from quite a few people. One day was spent starching and ironing all the fabrics and then cutting out all of the pieces needed for the quilt. I only have two 10″ squares left to embroider quotes on and I can start assembling the quilt! So excited to get to work on this project. This quilt is THE reason I started quilting! I’ll be able to share pictures and tell the story behind it in the middle of May.
