To-Do Tuesday 1-27-15 | Finish one quilt; Start another

The second Moxie quilt has been finished and mailed to my niece. Woo hoo! I hope she will love it.

I started my nephew’s quilt today, right after mailing my niece’s quilt. His birthday is the middle of March, so I’m not wasting any time getting his started. He loves Spiderman, so I decided to go with Red, Sapphire, and Charcoal in Timeless Treasures Sketch fabric. I saw Piece N Quilt’s Urban Churn Dash Sewalong and her Urban Churn Dash block reminded me of a spiderweb. Her block is 24″ finished size, but I didn’t want the quilt I was working on to be as big as her finished quilt. So I recalculated the pieces to make a 21″ finished block.

Urban Churn Dash Block. Corners are on wrong and need to be flipped.

I starched and pressed all the fabric today and cut out enough pieces to make one block. I wanted to test my measurements to be sure I didn’t miscalculate anything. I ended up putting the corner blocks on wrong (the red should be facing into the block, rather than to the outside). I will fix that on my next day off and continue cutting out all the pieces needed to complete the quilt top. Currently my starching and pressing is transferring some red to the ironing board, so before I continue cutting I will prewash all of my fabric. That’s not something I normally do, as I haven’t had any problems with bleeding in the past (and I thank my Color Catchers for that). However, I won’t be ignoring this big red flag, despite my desire to get this quilt done ASAP. I have a strong feeling it will bite me in the butt if I do.

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Write Moxie 2 Quilt post
  • Pre wash Sketch fabrics for Urban Churn Dash/Spiderman quilt Done 2/1
  • Cut all pieces for Urban Churn Dash Quilt. Start sewing blocks Done 2/1

To-Do Tuesday 1-19-15 |Back in Business

Quilting Brother PQ1500S

Ellie is all better!

My Precious is feeling much better after getting her new thread take up/check spring installed. I was very fortunate in that Mister put the tension knob assembly back together exactly as it was before. Which means that I had no tension adjustments to make! My settings are all the same as before, and what a relief that is! I immediately got back to quilting my niece’s Moxie quilt this week.

I have another 4 hours or so of quilting, and then it only needs to be bound. I was hoping to have it to my sister by Saturday, but I’m thinking that was an incredibly optimistic time frame. More like middle of next week.

This week’s to-do list is still simple. Get the quilt finished and in the mail! Next week I will be continuing to work on The F Word blocks along with Georgia Girl Quilts. Definitely looking forward to working on those blocks again!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish and mail Moxie quilt to niece. Done 1/26
  • Continue South Beach: Phase 2

To-Do Tuesday 1-13-15 | Crappy Quilting Weeks

The Bad Quilting Week

Crappy quilting weeks.  They happen.  Simply put, it’s Murphy’s Law for quilters.

They happen when you’re on a really tight deadline.  The bad spool of thread that breaks every 10 inches or so of quilting.  The bobbin that runs out right after you get a new spool and things are starting to go your way. The tension spring that breaks off and falls onto the quilt and into your field of vision just as you’re in the quilting groove. The youngest child telling you that your “mail by” date is actually the birthday date.  All in the same day.

Yep, that happened this week.  So I pretty much gave this past week the finger and have moved on.  I am not stressing since I’m already late and my sister was more than understanding about my not getting my niece her quilt in time for her birthday. I’ve got a new thread take up/check spring ordered and it should be here by Saturday.

Modern InstaBee 2014 January Block

Modern InstaBee 2014 January Block

Clearly I did not meet last week’s goal of finishing my niece’s quilt. I did, however, complete my last block for the 2014 Modern InstaBee.  I enjoyed making this block, but at the same time I am very glad that the monthly commitment is over.

Oopsie... Wrong Date!!

Oopsie… Wrong Date!!

As far as this week’s list, I need to fix the hand embroidered label I made for the quilt.  Thankfully I had not quilted over that part, so I just need to remove the basting stitches and change one number in the date.  If the check spring is here by Saturday as scheduled then I am hoping to get it installed, my tension set, and continue working on my niece’s quilt. It would be great to get it mailed by next week, if possible.

On a side note, one of the last things to do on my list last week was to start South Beach; to eat healthier and be healthier.  So far I have lost 3.5 pounds!  I know it was mostly water weight, and losing that much in one week is not healthy long-term, but I am pleased with that start.  Yay!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Fix quilt label. Done 1/18
  • Install new check spring and adjust tension as needed. Done 1/18
  • Continue quilting Moxie for niece. Almost done!
  • Continue South Beach: Phase 1

To-Do Tuesday | 2014 Wrap up | 2015 Sewing Plans

I didn’t mean to stop doing To-Do Tuesdays, much less go almost an entire month without blogging, but the holiday craziness and the new job just got the best of me.

My 2014 was fairly productive. Not as many quilts made as I had planned, but I did do a variety of projects.

Quilts:

The Vintage Quilt Revival top has only been pieced, not quilted yet. The MQG Southwest Individual Charity Quilt top blocks were created by members of our bee, I only sewed the blocks together into a quilt top.

Other Projects:

As I was going through my pictures I realized why I didn’t finish as many quilts as I intended. I was busy sewing other things! I made a set of Leaf hot pads, 10 Sew Together Bags (2 not shown), 6 boxy pouches (1 not shown), 2 purses, a stitched anniversary present for Mister, and a napkin and placemat set. In retrospect, I’m rather happy with my 2014 stitching!

My plans for 2015 are fairly simple. Absolutely no Block-Of-The-Months or Quilt-Alongs no matter how tempting they are to join. I have two BOM’s for 2014 that I still need to finish. I also have 4 quilts I must make; two for my nephews and two for my own children. Yep, it’s true that two of my three kids do not have quilts yet. I must rectify that this year!

I also participated in the Modern InstaBee 2014 last year, and I need to put together my blocks and make that into a quilt. I’d like to get my Vintage Quilt Revival quilted this year too.

I will be continuing to work on my F Word Quilt blocks along with Sarah of Georgia Girl Quilts. As I have time I want to finish my 2014 Sugar Block Club quilt and my 2014 Skill Builder quilt.

My other plan for this year is to join up with Leasa over at Project: Leasa for #SewMyStash2015. I have several fabric collections that I haven’t cut into yet (Hello Indelible!!) and I’d like to make something with them before I become a fabric collector.

That covers my 2014 wrap-up as well as my plans for 2015. As far as To-Do Tuesday goes, I’m currently working on my second Moxie quilt. The top was finished two days ago and I just finished piecing the back today. I work Tuesday through THursday this week, which means no sewing for me until Friday. Then I’ll have five days to get the quilt basted, quilted, bound and washed. I must ship this by the 13th so it will get to my niece in time for her birthday. So that is going to be my sole focus this week!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish Moxie Quilt
  • Write To-Do Tuesday post ahead of time
  • Start South Beach Diet and stick with it! Get Healthy!!
