To-Do Tuesday 2-24-15 | Best Laid Plans

Well. I had plans to get stuff done this past week. I had three blog posts to write, and a quilt top to finish. I’d like to say I crossed all that off my list. What I did manage to accomplish was nurse the entire family through a sick weekend. Blech!

The Mister became sick with the flu and that kept him down and feverish for about 6 days (he’s still recovering). My daughter caught the same thing, but thankfully seems to be much better tonight. My son and I both became ill with what seemed to be the beginnings of the flu, but we ended up with head colds. It is a huge understatement to say that I was sending up massive amounts of prayer and good thoughts that I would only be sick with a cold?! There is nothing worse than being sick and having to care for everyone else too. I ended up resting for two hours, doing rounds to see how the kids were doing, give meds and feed people and then go rest so I could do it all over again.

By Sunday I was feeling okay-ish enough to sit at the sewing machine and try to make progress on the Urban Churn Dash blocks. Sadly, I didn’t even enjoy the sewing. I just couldn’t let the whole weekend pass without doing something on this quilt. I’m running out of time… again! (Pretty sure that should be my quilty motto.) I managed to finish four of the blue blocks and got all 5 red blocks almost completely done. I need to only sew one more row onto the blocks and they’re all finished. Hoping to get this top assembled this coming week and would love to get the backing sewn and the whole thing basted. Asking too much? Possibly, if we’re going by the last few months’ progress on quilts.

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Assemble Urban Churn Dash quilt and make backing. Baste if there’s time. Done 3/1
  • Write Tula Pink post. Done 2/28
  • Write mini-quilts post.
  • Write Moxie 2 Quilt post Done 2/28

To-Do Tuesday 2-17-15 | Honest Craft Room

Happy To-Do Tuesday! I usually like to get this posted by Monday evening, but I spent a very relaxing day with the Mister and decided to postpone blogging until today. Plus, I needed to take pictures and it was too late for good lighting yesterday. I really should put “stop procrastinating” on my list.

Honest craft room!

My real life messiness. Ack! Also, Mugsy is supposed to be in his bed on the floor. But you can see where he prefers to sleep.

This is my honest craft room. I do not do well sewing with a mess surrounding me, and the past few days I’ve just been pulling fabric and tossing it on the day bed (the place where Mister is supposedly able to “rest” while I sew… but has actually become my WIP table). I’ve got my Urban Churn Dash block pieces on the ironing board/mini cutting mat to trim. My actual cutting table is also my sewing table, so I really can’t afford to have a messy room, since it truly inhibits my sewing. Today I’ll be putting away the fabric pulls and straightening everything up so that the only project that’s out is the Urban Churn Dash WIP.

Anna Maria Horner Folk Song

Anna Maria Horner Folk Song

I did get some fabric in this week. I absolutely love Folk Song by Anna Maria Horner, and couldn’t resist the line. I’d like to make a traditional quilt with this one. Possibly just a plain ol’ churn dash quilt, although I’ve a feeling it won’t be “plain” by the time I’m done with it.

Quilter's Linen in Garnet, Ochre and Sky

Quilter’s Linen in Garnet, Ochre and Sky. Love that Jackpot sticker!

I’ve also been ordering half yard pieces of various dark reds and golds to see which would be best for an Iron Man themed quilt. I tried some Timeless Treasures Bias Sketch and it was far too bright. So I ordered some Kaffe Fassett Shot Cottons and some Robert Kaufman Quilters Linen. The Quilters Linen pieces I ordered were exactly the colors I was looking for. I was hoping I would like the shot cottons, but I can not stand them. The fabric feels thin and is stretchy. The weave seams a bit loose, and I can literally see my hand through the fabric. I just realized that Fabric.com has a hassle-free, free 30 day return policy, and I am going to use it. I am actually a little shocked at how much I disliked the KF Shot Cottons. Perhaps my expectation of how they would feel was wrong, since I expected a stiffer quilting cotton. I thought they would be more like Alyssa Haight Carlton’s Modern Solids II, and in no way are they similar. Have you used these particular shot cottons before? Did they seem different or the same as I described?

Just keep trimming, just keep trimming (sang in my best Dori voice)

This week I’m hoping to get the pieces for the Urban Churn Dash blocks trimmed and get the blocks (and hopefully the top) assembled. I always struggle with my Flying Geese blocks, so this time I sewed with my needle to one side of the marked line.  Big mistake, since my points are right at the top of the block.  All of them ended up the same way, so I’m leaving them like they are.  I don’t have enough fabric to redo them, so the points will just have to be cut off.  I don’t think it will be a major deal once the quilt is done, since all the blocks will have the same look to them.

I also need to write three blog posts, and the next two days are work days. I’m usually not motivated to do much after work, other than feed the family and relax. I’m hoping to not feel so tired this week and get these done and posted. I really did not mean to stop blogging other than once a week after starting work, so I’m going to have to get a lot better about it than I have been!

By the way, attending Tula Pink‘s Lecture and Trunk Show at Quiltique was an out-of-this-world amazing experience for me. That’s one post I hope to get written very soon!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish trimming and assemble Urban Churn Dash blocks
  • Write Tula Pink post
  • Write mini-quilts post
  • Write Moxie 2 Quilt post

To-Do Tuesday 2/9/15 | Just A Lot Late

To Do Tuesday Button 200 x 200

I completely blew To-Do Tuesday this week. I’ve been extraordinarily busy (not to mention super tired) and did not get anything done on last week’s list. I did, however, add two projects that did not even exist in my mind when I wrote last weeks list. Isn’t that always the way? I can not post pictures of them yet, as the recipients have not received them. If you follow me on Instagram you probably know what they are. If not, I plan on blogging about them very shortly!

I have no time for sewing this week, so I’m skipping this week’s list. On second thought, if I did have anything on my list it would be:

Yeah. I’m pretty excited about that.

In lieu of my usual To-Do Tuesday link up, I’d like to ask you to visit three of the most frequent blogs that link up on Tuesday. Since they actually remembered to write their posts!!

Pamela of Paisley Parkes is always creating something amazing, and she announced a new weekly blog post that I’m very excited about! Her recent To Do Tuesday post can be found HERE.

Sarah of Georgia Girl Quilts has been busy making multiple projects, including some knitting that looks pretty amazing from where I’m sitting. Loving the colors she’s using! Also, I’m super curious about how a quilt top she just finished is going to look all quilted. You can find her To Do Tuesday post HERE.

Quilting Jet Girl stops by regularly and leaves such encouraging feedback. She is such an inspirational quilter and creates spectacular quilts! Her recent post is Thankful Thursday and can be found HERE. It’s a link-up post, so please be sure to link up with her if you have something you are thankful for this week!

I’m thankful for the supportive bloggers mentioned above, who are part of a larger community of sewists/quilters/stitchers who constantly encourage one another. Ya’ll are amazing!

To-Do Tuesday 2-3-15

It’s another week! How did you do with your list last week? I didn’t get around to getting my Moxie blog post written, I just wasn’t feeling well enough this week. My brain sort of took a hiatus and the words would just not come freely. Speaking of, I’m sorry for the delayed blog responses and visits to your linked up blogs. I hope to do much better this week, since I have been feeling better the past couple of days.

First pre-wash of Red Sketch Fabric

So glad I pre-washed!

This past weekend I prewashed all of the fabric for the Urban Churn Dash/Spiderman quilt. Boy, was that the right call. My first color catcher came out as red as the fabric! I ran it through again with two color catchers and they came out pink-ish. So, definitely the right call to get everything washed! Whew!

First and Second wash Color Catchers

After washing the fabric, I got all of the pieces for the top cut out, and started sewing. The HST’s are sewn and cut in half, and half of the Flying Geese are done. I sewed the two fabrics for the 4-patch center in WOF strips and I just need to subcut those to make the 4-patch block. I’m hoping that I can get all the parts of the block sewn together by the end of Tuesday (as I’m off of work), and then get the top finished over the weekend. I’d really like to be ahead of schedule on this quilt, since I ended up so far behind on the other.

Urban Churn Dash WIP

Urban Churn Dash WIP

I spent Saturday with my boss/co-workers teaching them to sew this cloak tutorial from Finding Storybook Land. My boss and her daughter (actually, my friends!) wanted to make hooded cloaks for their granddaughters/nieces. Neither women had any sewing experience, so I had a very enjoyable day teaching them the basics of their machine, how to clean and oil it, and some basic apparel sewing. They did all the sewing, all I did was explain the instructions and guide them when they had questions. I was blown away at how quickly they picked up sewing, and how wonderful their cloaks turned out. It’s so great being able to share this skill with others… I hope they enjoyed the experience as much as I did!

What are your plans for this week?

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Write Moxie 2 Quilt post
  • Continue making Urban Churn Dash blocks, complete top.
