Becoming Weary of Eerie | To-Do Tuesday 10-27-14

Yes, it’s true… I’m a bit tired of still working on the Eerie quilt. I think it’s more that I’m just disappointed I won’t have more time to enjoy the quilt during Halloween before having to put it away. I’m not entirely convinced I’ll actually finish it by Halloween either. Although my fingers are crossed for a timely finish!

Eerie Quilting In Progress

Eerie Quilting In Progress

It seemed that every day I had plans to work on the quilt ended up being spent having to run errands, or deal with some child issue. I also had an unpicking session when I discovered several rows had tension problems I didn’t notice during the quilting. So pretty much life happened last week, as did the usual quilting issues. At least the cross hatch quilting is done on the blocks as of yesterday and now all I have to do is quilt the borders! I have decided to machine quilt the binding too. I don’t like to do that, I really prefer to hand stitch it to the back, but I need to get this quilt finished as I also have a Bee block that needs to be made and I must get mailed out by Friday. I just love how I always underestimate the time needed to make quilts!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Quilt Eerie Borders Done 10/30
  • Bind Eerie quilt Done 10/30
  • Make and mail October Modern InstaBee block Done 11/3

Now it’s your turn! Write up your post and link up using the InLinkz linky below.

Finished quilt top

Finished quilt top

This past week I managed to finish the Eerie quilt top and make a backing for it. I basted the quilt on Sunday using Sharon Schamber’s thread basting method. I started quilting it yesterday, but didn’t get very far. I’m hoping to get the quilting finished and the binding sewn to the front no later than Wednesday.

I’m hoping to get back to sewing the Sew Together Bags this week too. Christmas seems to be racing towards me, so I need to get on track with those.

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish quilting Eerie quilt. Finished the crosshatch quilting on the blocks, still quilting the borders.
  • Bind Eerie quilt
  • Continue sewing Christmas gifts

Now it’s your turn! Write up your post and link up using the InLinkz linky below.

Where I Bake and Clean Instead of Sew | To-Do Tuesday 10-14-14

To Do Tuesday Button 200 x 200

I am a wonderful wife. So wonderful that I actually forgot to add my husband’s birthday prep and celebration to last week’s To-Do list. Go me! So I didn’t get too much sewing done this past week.  However, I did end up making a pretty bomb cake.

Mister originally asked for a Black Forest cake.  Then he remembered that I’m not fond of cherries.  That’s not relevant to the birthday person’s choice of cake in our house, but he decided that a dark chocolate cake with a strawberry filling and whipped cream frosting sounded better.  I used to make and decorate cakes, so I was up to the challenge.  Despite the fact that I sold all of my cake decorating supplies last year because everyone seemed to be done with homemade cakes, opting for Dairy Queen ice cream cakes the past four years. I think I managed quite well with my plastic spatula, a new set of cake pans, and a random star tip and frosting bag I had shoved in a drawer.

Mister's Birthday Cake

Mister’s Birthday Cake

Thank goodness for Allrecipes. I found a great recipe for strawberry filling.  I used this recipe to make the chocolate cake.  I decided to make the whipped cream frosting from this recipe. I also tried to make chocolate curls for the first time.  At first I refrigerated the chocolate, thinking that would keep it from melting when using a potato peeler to get the curls.  That just made chocolate shavings.  I used that to coat the sides of the cake. Then a facebook friend posted a recipe by The Pioneer Woman and less then ten minutes later I had chocolate curls! I will definitely be making them again.   Everyone in the family treated me like a rockstar that day.

I also managed to get the house deep cleaned this past week.  Why is it that the house never seems dirty and cleaning never seems more important than sewing until someone is coming over?  Well, at least that’s done until the Holidays and we were able to have a wonderful visit with Mister’s son and wife!

F Word Blocks and Eerie Quilt top

F Word Blocks and Eerie Quilt top

I did get in a bit of sewing in this week. I finished two F Word blocks. I paper pieced the Windmill block, but did not print the paper pieces out in mirror image.  So my block is actually the reverse of what it’s supposed to be.  Since it still looks fine the way it is, I will not be re-doing the block.  I like it!  I also made a Basket block, but since I’m not a fan of applique I chose not to add the handle.  I’m pretending it’s “modern” version of the Basket block.

I also finished assembling the Eerie quilt blocks into a top yesterday. I will be focusing on the quilt this week and plan on adding the borders and making the quilt back.  I am feeling too distracted by the quilt to focus on the Christmas gifts or the Sugar Block Club block.  No F Word blocks for this week either.

Whacky Witches in Stitches WIP

Whacky Witches in Stitches WIP

The evenings are normally reserved for stitching, but I haven’t made much progress on my Whacky Witches In Stitches this past week. Too tired. I’m just about finished with block 5 and block 8 was just released today. I’m a little behind so I’m not sure this will be finished by Halloween.  I sure am enjoying stitching it up though!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Add borders to Eerie & make backing Completed 10/18
  • Baste, Quilt & Bind Eerie Basted 10/19, started quilting 10/20

To-Do Tuesday | 10-7-14

To Do Tuesday Button 200 x 200

This past week I have been feeling like I’ve had a cold coming on and it’s made me feel pretty blah. Thankfully, the sewing seemed a bit easy this week.

The two The F Word blocks that Sarah and I worked on this week were Autumn Tints and Windblown Square. See what I mean about easy sewing this week?! Nice!

I opted to work on my Eerie quilt rather than get more of the Sew Together Bags cut out. Like I said, I needed easy sewing this week and trying to figure out what fabrics I wanted to use on the different parts of the Sew Together Bag did not sound like easy work to me. So I got all of the Eerie blocks finished, I cut out the strips for an inner border and an outer border (the dark fabric), and started piecing my left over jelly rolls strips into strip sets and subcutting them into 3″ strips. That will be the middle border between the two darker ones.

I did get the June Sugar Block Club finished this week. I also felt well enough yesterday to finish one of the two Sew Together Bags I had halfway done, and started working on finishing the second one. These came together nicely enough that I should be able to get the others done assembly line style now that I know the process.

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Make two F-Word blocks Completed 10/7
  • Sugar Block Club – July Block “Serve”
  • Assemble Eerie quilt top Blocks sewn together, still need to add borders 10/13
  • Christmas gifts: Finish purple/teal Sew Together Bag. Cut out remaining fabric pulls and interfacing pattern pieces
