To-Do Tuesday 1-10-17 | Project Bags On The Brain

Happy Tuesday! How is everyone settling into the new year? Have you chosen any projects you want to get done this year? I love watching what you all make throughout the year, and I’m glad you share it here with us!

Stitch ALL The Things | Acacia Project Bag Set

This past week my sole focus was, once again, the Project Bags. I finished up my two orders and sent them off. The feedback I received was awesome! I worked with two fantastic customers to come up with these bags and I love them! If you know Tula, you know the Acacia Raccoon print is rare and hard to find. I had enough in my stash to make this one bag, but that is no longer available. Because, yes, I’m hoarding my last half yard!

Stitch ALL The Things | Elizabeth Project Bag Set

Tula Pink’s Elizabeth line is fantastic for these bags. The 16th Century Selfie print is AWESOME and works perfectly to show through the vinyl front. And that Chain Mail print? Bomb. That’s all I have to say about that!

Stitch ALL The Things | Fox Nap Project Bag Set

The Fox Nap print from Tula Pink’s Chipper line was a big hit, and I’ve made three bags from that fabric. It’s just too cute!

Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the finished bags for the second order, so I don’t have the “pretty” pictures I like to take once an item is finished. However, I did grab a status update picture for my customer of her three bags where two were finished and one was a WIP. So at least there is some record of the bags made!

Stitch ALL The Things | Slytherin Project Bag

I started Danielle/Stitcherista’s Slytherin bag today. I was so close to being done, but dinner time was headed my way and I had to stop to feed the hungry people in the house. That will be finished first thing in the morning and then I start work on a new customer’s bag. Yes! I have another customer! Yay! I am so excited!! Selling the bags in the shop isn’t going to work out quite like the shop or I had hoped for. I don’t see that as a negative thing, and I need to share that the shop owner is an amazing woman and I am so appreciative for her help and encouragement. I believe I am headed in the right direction though, and I am hopeful I can get an Etsy shop up and running within two weeks. I will have some time this week and next to get some bags sewn for it. I’ll share the link here when it’s done!

This week’s To-Do list:

To-Do Tuesday 1-3-2017 | Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a fun and safe New Years holiday!

Stitch ALL The Things | Mermaid Project Bag

This week was one heck of a roller coaster ride. I finished another Large sized The Project Bag and grime guard Q Snap cover for Danielle, aka Stitcherista. Love how this bag turned out! I also was working figuring out the correct pricing for the bags when I read some small verbiage in the pattern which read, in part, “This pattern is protected by copyright and is intended for the personal use of retail purchaser only… Permission is granted to make up to ten bags for gifts or for sale. If you want to make more than ten, please contact Annie Unrein for permission.” I can’t tell you the distress I felt for about 24 hours after reading that. Copyright law (in the U.S.) covers the pattern itself; the content and images. You can NOT copyright the end product made from the pattern when it is considered a “useful item”, as bags are. Which means you can make as many as you want to sell, keep or giveaway. However, some pattern designers attempt to control that by adding adding such wording to their patterns. Some even attempt to get more money by selling a cottage license. Which is not at all legally necessary. I struggled for hours with what to do, as my actions would not only impact myself but potentially the shop who contacted me for bags. The worst that could happen would be Cease and Desist letters and the threat of litigation. But really… who wants to deal with that sort of stress in their life even if they are legally in the right?! In the end, I contacted the designer and received such an amazing response from her. She said she includes that verbiage in her patterns to prevent mass production, but if it was just me sewing bags then I absolutely had permission to sew them. Also? She said if I sent her pictures and let her know when I had them available to sell, she would do some marketing for me. Sayyyyy what???!??!?!?! So, my crushing day turned out brilliantly! But, I must admit, it set me back this week.

After coming back from that rather rough day, I got to work on the two sets of bag orders. I completed three of the bags on Monday, one bag is mostly sewn (I’m just waiting for some Soft and Stable to arrive so I can quilt the main panel), and two more bags will be sewn by the end of Tuesday.

Stitch ALL The Things | Project Bag WIPS

One of the orders requested grime guards, so I’ve got four prepped and ready to sew Tuesday as well.

It’s been a busy week, and I’ve still got a lot of work ahead, but I am SEW excited about it!

What do you hope to accomplish in 2017? I can’t wait to read all about it!

This week’s To-Do list:

  • Finish two Project Bag commissions
  • Work on shop commission

To-Do Tuesday 12-27-16 | Scratch That…

Happy Tuesday! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend!

Stitch ALL The Things | Tula Pink Project Bags

Last week I talked about my plans for 2017. I may have to rework that plan after yesterday morning. I made some project bags for an Instagram/FB friend, Danielle (aka Stitcherista). The Big C decided to knock on her door and she’s currently in the middle of kicking the crap out of it. She is a cross stitcher and does FlossTube videos (YouTube videos made by cross stitchers). She is hilarious! Anyway, I decided to make her some project bags. She thanked me in her video yesterday and briefly showed the bags I made. And then my whole world exploded.

I had a couple of people contact me right away to ask to order some bags. I was so blown away and a little frantic that I quoted some really low prices and got to work getting fabric pulls done and sending pictures. And then. AND THEN. A needlework shop contacted Danielle to ask me to email them about my bags. What an amazing compliment, right?! I am talking with them about potentially making some bags for them to sell in their shop. Turns out my pricing was way off… near wholesale prices. Which is true, because I quoted enough to cover my materials, plus just a few dollars more. Mister is always telling me that I price things too low, and turns out he was right. Well, there’s a couple of ladies getting a great deal on some project bags out there!

I am not sure how things will end up with the shop, as we are just discussing this right now. I know I often talk about setting up an Etsy store, and it may end up that I finally do that and sell these project bags. Maybe having some inventory with these project bags to keep an Etsy store open will motivate me to finally make a few handbags and stock them as well. Anyway, I’m super excited about the possibilities that opened up for me on Monday, but really overwhelmed as well. My brain is very scattered today. I know that I have several bags to make in the next few weeks, and I had a couple I wanted to make for myself. I am not sure mine will get done for a while now, we’ll see. I talked to Mister today about his quilt that I was supposed to baste, quilt, and bind, but he told me not to worry about it for the moment. He is just happy to see me motivated to start selling bags and knows I will get the quilt done when I can.

So, this coming week, my to-do list will consist of making more of these project bags. I also have to prep a couple of cross stitching kits for my evening stitching in January. Since I am feeling off-track already, and 2017 is not even here, I’m simply going to take each thing as it comes. No pressure to get everything done that I talked about last week. I am learning that crafting and creating is a process that must be adapted to constantly. Something that inspires you one day, may not several days later. I’ve just got to roll with it!

I wish you a Happy New Year! Have a happy and safe New Years Eve!
